What happened: A one-of-one Cooper Flagg rookie card sold for $8.04 million early Friday morning in Fanatics Collect’s September Premier Auction, per the auction house. The 2026 Topps Chrome Updates NBA Debut Patch autograph drew 83 bids between Sept. 10 and Sept. 24, climbing from $3.5 million to $8.04 million in the final hours.
The background: Flagg wore the patch on his jersey for his NBA debut on Oct. 22 — 10 points and 10 rebounds in a loss to San Antonio. The patch was removed, authenticated, and built into a single signed card; no second copy exists. The card surfaced in August during a live-streamed break by Rhody Breakers in Rhode Island and was consigned by South Carolina collector Jason Williams. The debut patch program began in Major League Baseball in 2023 and reached the NBA with the 2025 draft class — the first in which every drafted player wore a debut patch.
The scale: Fanatics Collect says the sale set five records: most expensive basketball card featuring a single player ever sold, most expensive debut patch card ever, most expensive Dallas Mavericks card, the most sold at auction through Fanatics Collect, and the third-highest NBA card sale ever. The previous debut-patch record was the $1.11 million paid for Paul Skenes’ card in March 2025; the old high for any Flagg card was $366,000, per Fanatics Collect. Card Ladder and The Athletic rank the sale the fifth-highest publicly known sports card transaction, ahead of the $7.25 million paid for the T206 Honus Wagner in 2022. The same auction moved two more debut patches: Dylan Harper’s at $2.88 million and Kon Knueppel’s at $2.34 million.
The previous record for a debut patch card in any sport was $1.11 million — Flagg’s cleared it more than seven times over.
