What happened: Payton Pritchard is now under contract with the Boston Celtics through at least 2028-29, with a mutual option on 2029-30. The team announced on October 17 that the guard had signed an extension and said terms were not disclosed, per team policy. The NBA’s transaction log records the signing on October 16 and classifies it as a veteran extension. The agreement surfaced on October 13 in a report by Shams Charania of ESPN, who cited Pritchard’s agents at CAA, Austin Brown and Max Saidman: two years and $44.2 million, with the option attached.
The terms: With Boston silent on money, every dollar figure below comes from reporting, and the first account came from the player’s own representatives. The new seasons are 2028-29 and 2029-30, and the option attaches to the second of them, so the $44.2 million total includes the option year. ESPN’s Bobby Marks put the salaries at $21.2 million for 2028-29 and $22.9 million for 2029-30 in a breakdown that NBC Sports Boston published. Under the mutual option, either Pritchard or the Celtics can exercise 2029-30; he reaches free agency only if both decline, Hoops Rumors reported.
Two details remain unsettled in the reporting. ESPN called the deal fully guaranteed, while Hoops Rumors described one standard guaranteed season followed by the option season. NESN published salaries of $21,250,000 and $22,950,000 without citing a source; those do not match the exact figures Hoops Rumors calculated. Neither the team nor the league has released year-by-year numbers.
Pritchard’s existing contract, a four-year, $30 million rookie scale extension that the transaction log dates to October 10, 2023, pays him roughly $7.77 million for 2026-27 and $8.3 million for 2027-28, according to Hoops Rumors.
The cap math: Article VII of the 2023 collective bargaining agreement caps the first salary of a veteran extension at the greater of 140 percent of the player’s final-season salary or 140 percent of the league’s Estimated Average Player Salary for the season the extension is signed. Pritchard’s 2027-28 salary falls below that average, so the average set his limit. Hoops Rumors put the 2026-27 estimate at $15,163,000, which yields a 2028-29 ceiling of $21,228,200; the CBA’s 8 percent limit on annual raises then allows $22,926,456 in 2029-30, for $44,154,656 across both seasons. Hoops Rumors said the reported terms appear to match those maximums, and Marks said the first season is the most allowed. ESPN’s “max” label refers to that extension ceiling, which is a different limit from the maximum salary the CBA ties to a percentage of the salary cap.
Article IX limits a veteran extension to five seasons from the date it is signed, with seasons already on the contract counting toward the five. Pritchard had 2026-27 and 2027-28 remaining, which left room for three added seasons. NESN reported before the agreement that the most he could sign for was three years and $69 million. The sides chose two, and neither has publicly explained the length. Marks said Pritchard can extend again starting in October 2028, NESN reported.
The calendar came from Article VII as well. Because the deal was signed more than a year before July 1, 2028, the opening of the league year in which the new seasons begin, the CBA allowed it only during the off-season, a window that closes on the eve of the regular season. NESN identified October 19 as that last day this year, with Boston opening its season October 20 per NBC Sports Boston, and July 2027 as the next opening had talks failed.
The 2028-29 salary cap, tax line and apron levels have not been set, so the extension’s share of those thresholds cannot yet be measured against a primary figure.
The background: Boston drafted Pritchard 26th overall out of Oregon in 2020. He was part of the 2024 championship team and won 2024-25 Sixth Man of the Year, the team noted. In 2025-26 he set career highs of 17.0 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds in 32.4 minutes a game, over 79 appearances with 50 starts, per the team’s release. At 28, he is the Celtics’ second-longest-tenured player.
The Celtics’ position: “We’re thrilled that he’s chosen to extend with the C’s,” Celtics basketball operations president Brad Stevens stated in the team’s release. Pritchard had not commented publicly on the deal in the sources reviewed.
The league’s transaction log shows every contract of Pritchard’s NBA career signed with Boston: a rookie scale contract on November 24, 2020, a rookie scale extension dated October 10, 2023, and this veteran extension, dated October 16, 2026.
